Week 1 day five activty 1

Hey bloggers. For the summer learning journey we have to write an argument about is it ok to do logging in NZ. I think logging is not ok because...

  • You could cut down a native tree.
  • It helps with deforestation.
  • It's bad for our world.

If you agree with me then drop a comment and blog you later.

  2. Hi Jasmine,

It's Leslie here, writing to you from Canada as a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. It's lovely to see the picture you've posted of green grass and green trees because right now our community is all white. We have a covering of snow on the ground and the trees and bushes are frosted as well. It's beautiful, but a different kind of beauty from summertime.

I agree with you that cutting down trees is not always a good idea. It does contribute to deforestation which, we know, means that the soils are often damaged and tend to be washed away in rain storms leaving an area infertile.

You mention that native trees are cut down by lumberers. What is your concern about that? Is there a shortage of native trees? Perhaps you could give a little more information about each of your points in your argument.

We have real concerns about the amount of logging that is happening in Canada too. Many of us don't want any more forests destroyed by logging, especially as there have been some huge forest fires in the past few years which have caused a lot of damage 'naturally'.

Unfortunately, though, we don't have a lot of alternative materials for building our houses and other buildings, do we? Wood is the number one building material used in Canada, so we feel the need to keep cutting down trees in order to do new building and repairs. Have you got any ideas as to how we could build with some other material, without causing more pollution or damage to the earth?

I'm enjoying reading your blog. I hope you're enjoying a really lovely summer day!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
